Hei ystävät!
Pian on aika Vanha Talo Suomen erityiseen julkiseen puutarhapäivätapahtumaan 06.08.2023 – ensi viikonloppuna avaamme puutarhaportin sinulle tutustumaan puutarhoihin! Olemme valmistautuneet ahkerasti vierailullesi!
For those of you who will be making their first journey to the Vanha Talo Suomi gardens, it’s a good time to play: Remember when…

For instance, it’s probably a good idea to relate what it was we started off with, for those who haven’t followed the renovation projects from the beginning.

The ‘garden’ was closer to resembling a large field of meter tall grass and weeds, than an actual garden – of any kind.

At the front end of the shed building there was a small porch for outdoor sitting after having a sauna. Interestingly enough, there was also a full-sized porcelain bathtub out there, but filled with garbage by the time we had arrived on the scene! Oh, the memories! While we’ve added much, there was almost as much to take away – a whole house filled with unwanted belongings, multiple skips of construction refuse during the demolition, and we’ve hauled uncountable loads of garden refuse to be recycled than we could have ever hoped to count.
For all that has happened and changed during our relatively brief stint here, our garden continues to be a work-in-progress. Seasonally, we are trying to make the best use of our allotted space by filling the senses with color, visual interest, and aroma from blooming plants. Native plants as well as numerous exotic trees, bushes and plants are all assembled together in a very impracticable, but wholly enjoyable gardening experience – at least we think so! With so many varieties of plants tried, tested and thriving – there is much to take away as information for your own garden spaces. Much of what you will see is tagged with identification labels, so that you can research the plants that you find interesting. There are many plants we would have loved to have grown here, but they would not survive Finnish winters without great assistance from us. We have experienced losses of even fully-hardy plants – I shudder to think of what the realities of trying to grow tender & sensitive plants would entail.
It’s good to also remember Vanha Talo Suomi Gardens did not exist until 2016 – two years after the house renovation, which we began in 2014. Other than old apple trees, some towering pines and spruces trees, and hundreds of berry bushes – there was not much here – except lots of potential.

It’s very inspiring what you have done there with the house and gardens. I love that you open your garden to visitors so they can enjoy and be inspired as well.

It wasn’t that many years ago when the choices available at the local nurseries were pretty uninspiring. Over time, Finns have been a bit more adventurous towards landscaping and garden design. My refrain of ….you cannot buy what someone isn’t selling… seems to have borne out as fact. Now nurseries offer quite a few interesting plants & trees, in addition to the ‘regulars’. We ventured outside of Finland to Latvia & Estonia for lots of our items. Plants too from within the EU, Lithuania, Poland, and Czech Republic. And many roses from both England and Germany. I have an order in for a couple of roses from France coming as bare root later this autumn. So quite the international gardening experience. 😀

Even more inspiring–that you were so dedicated in sourcing interesting plants that you went international in your searches! Well done!
