Hello dear friends!
Christmas cheer and the sounds and delights of the season are once again in full swing here, and greet you everywhere you go. Casually, the radio programming started sliding holiday songs into the playlist, and then the hustle and bustle of people making preparations for incoming guests and the gathering of friends got truly underway. Commercial advertisements are now heavily sprinkled with the latest examples of holiday tables as well as decorating ideas, recipes for old favorites and new flavor adventures, gift ideas for young and old alike. Yes, it’s that holiday time of year! A Finnish magazine, Kotiliesi, showcases a few examples of what you might encounter as far as Finnish holiday decor. Variations of the items depicted abound in multitudes of adaptations, colors and sizes, with large and over-sized illuminated paper stars being by far the most common here in Finland.

Our little town of Lohja, has a very beautiful and festive holiday light display. This photo from a few years ago captures the scene. The strings of crystal clear lights are draped heavily across main street, Laurinkatu. There are tiny lights, large round orbs, as well as long thin ‘icicle’ rods that encase a beam of light traveling slowly north to south mimicking a dripping icicle.

A short-lived, northerly blast sent temperatures plummeting last weekend, giving the yearly Lohjan Joulumarkkinät (Lohja Christmas market) a very seasonal feel. The only thing missing was the snow! As is typical, we received our first snow near the end of November, and as typical it promptly melted within a couple of days… doing little to alleviate the darkness and gloom of dwindled daylight hours. It’s remarkable what a difference a light coating of snowfall makes. Any light is reflected, and that includes moonlight, bringing an instantaneous brightening effect.
Most towns of size throughout Finland decorate lampposts with electrified light holiday decor of some kind. The neighboring town of Nummela, has a very lovely lighted moose in the town center, which is brought out of storage to sit in the market square for Christmas. This photo from 2023 shows it in daylight hours. It’s massive!

There was much laughter and many stories shared earlier in December when I hosted friends for a pikkujoulu (little Christmas) luncheon. Plied with appetizers, glögi, wine, and a hearty meal, the hours flew by, at least for me! What a grand time, shared with wonderful friends!! The following day was Finnish Independence Day (Itsenäisyyspäivä) – both a festive, but mostly solemn day of remembrance.
I chickened out on an invitation to once again join my friend Eira for an outing to the Haikarin Sauna for a bit of sauna and lake swimming. I’ve accompanied her on one other (my first) venture to Haikari sauna, and it was both great and shocking. Great relaxation as I mingled with all sorts of people from Lohja in a huge public sauna, then we ambled to the lake and down the ladder into the water… it was breathtaking! Literally. I completely lost my breath as the water was colder (shocking) than I had first imagined, and it was still only November! She assured me it gets easier each time, but she’s been going for a number of years now, several times a month. It took everything to remember to breath, or try to!, while also flailing my arms and feet underwater in what felt like a futile attempt to stay above water. It’s more of a plunge and not actual swimming, at least in my regard. Getting out of the water, on the amble back to the sauna, was remarkably a great feeling. After being in the cold water, I felt completely impervious to the cold nighttime temperature, as well as the blustery wind, despite standing outside in a soaking wet bikini. So, I said sure, I’d give it another go! The second dip was easier now that I knew, more or less, what to expect. She went for a third plunge, which I declined. 😉
Skip ahead from November to last weekend, and of course, as if knowing I was going to be swimming later, a cold front moved in to overtake the mild weather we had been experiencing with a blast from the north. The afore mentioned Christmas market was extra chilly for attendees, but so too were any other activities planned for out-of-doors! The cold front lingered for the weekend, then departed as quickly as it had shown up. We are once again back to plus temperatures, a bit rainy, and otherwise a tad dreary. There have been a few fleeting instances of snowflakes in the forecast, but with daytime temperatures lingering around 5c or slightly higher, there’s 0 chance of lasting snow at least this week. Next week, however, the forecast temperatures are trending lower, so who knows! Maybe a white Christmas in the final moments may be a possibility! BTW: Eira is made of sturdy stuff and had no trouble at all in going lake swimming without me! Yeah, Eira!
All I can say is this Christmas season has been the best one for me in a long time. Having met and made friends with these wonderful ladies has made all the difference! My holiday wish is that you too are able to share the warmth of good times with wonderful friends.
Best wishes to all!
Merry Christmas!! I hope the new year is filled with joy, and brings you good health and much happiness!! Hyvää Joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta kaikille!!
Oh my goodness, it all looks so festive, Kate! I hope you have beautiful white Christmas, literally the icing on the cake. It’s rain and gloom all the way here, I struggle with the low light levels at this time of year but of course they are nothing like you have in Finland. ❄️
I smiled to read about your sauna and lake dip. Last time we visited Norway, our daughter-in-law booked us a sauna in Stavanger with obligatory dip in the fjord between roastings . . . not being a fan of cold water or wild swimming, I was dreading it but felt I had to be brave: this was a top Nordic experience, after all. 😬 As it happens, the weather was vile, single figures and lashing rain so I was soaking wet and cold even before I lowered myself down the ladder into the Norwegian Sea. . . . but this was in June, I have nothing but admiration for you doing it in winter. Huge respect, my friend! 🙌
Just out of interest, is Eira a Finnish name? I also have a friend called Eira, her name is Welsh and means ‘snow’ which is very fitting for the season! So lovely that you have wonderful friends to enjoy good times and laughter with, they are very precious indeed.
Wishing you and Pekka a very merry festive season ~ Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! 😊💕

Festive we have!
Sauna that day felt hot to me, higher than our home sauna which is 78c. After sauna for about 15–20 minutes, we took our first dip. The sauna building and dressing rooms are set back from the lake edge, so there was a bit of time making the trek to the dock and ladder down. There was a fair bit of socializing to be had on either trek to or from the lake. I noticed I was already starting to lose the heat of the sauna though before I’d gotten all the way down the ladder into the water… then shockingly cold assault to the senses!! 😀 Not sure how I would fare with no sauna or a warm one vs hot. My second dip was more of a bee-line directly to the water hoping to retain some of the heat gained back from the sauna.
I will definitely give it another go. I think it would be beneficial to become initiated to the practice at a warmer time of year, and gradually ease into it. Just popping in out of the blue was difficult. But, there were moments that were worth giving it another go. In a snowy landscape, I think the whole experience would be A+++
Yes, Eira is a Finnish name, I’m sure it has a meaning as most Finnish words do, but I don’t know it. Name lengths of only four letters are very common, too.
p.s. I knew all the ladies from classes through the years, but it was only this year that our acquaintance status elevated to true friendship. Now we get in touch often, and that’s made all the difference in making this year one of the best since I’ve been in Finland.
Thank you Lis, all the best to you both for a very happy Christmas! Sending you glad tidings for a joyous new year!

Here in Wales we have had mild weather but it has rained most days and sometimes very heavily. Flooding is what we are reading about not snow! I know people who go swimming in the sea all year round and enjoy it but I am a whimp! Stay warm and safe and enjoy your friends Happy Christmas!

It’s been rainy and wet here for so long, I cannot honestly say when it started. There are plenty of low-lying farms throughout Finland which I’m sure are dealing with standing water and flooding too right now. We appreciate the snowfall as it really has an immediate effect. Even though we are in southern Finland, our sunrise is not until 09:21 today and sunset at 15:11, and until 21 December daylight continues to dwindle. Then, of course, it starts slowly moving the other way! So a little (or a lot) of snow helps bring a little light into daily life. Finns are pretty active, and are quick to utilize and adapt to the situation. Kids here are taught to ski and ice skate as toddlers. I can definitely say and see how lake or sea swimming in all seasons would NOT bring universal enjoyment or be a pastime for the masses. Even during the summer, I find the lake water in Finland to be extremely cold. It takes a major heatwave for me to even contemplate a visit to the lake, so this sauna/swim stuff will take some getting used to before I ditch it completely. I honestly don’t know if it’s for me either! Stay well and snuggled up. Thank you for your greetings. Happy Christmas!

Thank you for your lovely comment. I love snow too and it really does improve the light – but only if I can admire it from indoors in the warm or for a brisk walk with the dogs. Have a lovely Christmas

Hi Kate, the weather is absolutely as boring here in Somero. Let’s hope for a snow dusting during the Christmas holidays.
Happy holidays to you both and take care!

Hi Luisella! Yes, the weather is dreary. Next week may hold a chance for snowfall as temps look to be chilly.
Merry Christmas to you and Risto! Buon Natale!
