      • Could I ask you to do me a favour? Would you listen to the Hector version of Where Do You Go To, My Lovely? and tell me how it sounds in Finnish? I can hear him using French names in the first couple of lines, but then he stops. Is he using Finnish brands. actors, singers, holiday destinations to give the same sense of high living that the original does? You don’t need to read the whole post, Hector’s about two thirds of the way through. http://singbetterenglish.wordpress.com/2014/11/02/where-do-you-go-to/ I hope you don’t think that’s too cheeky! 🙂

        • I had my Finnish husband listen and this is what his take on the song was…
The French words remained French. No Finnish substitutions for place names, holiday destinations, etc. The song was sung with the same or nearly the same original lyrics – just in Finnish instead of English.

          • Thank you – and thank you to your husband 🙂 I had thought that the song diverted from the original because I couldn’t hear any more French names. I’ll alter what I say in the post. Thanks again.

I don’t even know you and I’m so excited for you and the adventure you’re on!
My partner and I have been talking recently about buying a “fixer upper” next year so I’m thrilled that I can follow your blog to see what we’re potentially in for. (great photos by the way!!)
I’m looking forward to seeing more posts.

  4. Ooh, this looks fun to follow! I love old house restoration/renovation, and I’m psyched to see a piece of Helsinki, a city I plan to visit in January.

    • Helsinki is a lovely city full of great things to see and experience. If you’re interested in activities, please have a look at: http://www.messis.fi where you can browse all sorts of things happening. If you happen to be a member of InterNations.org you can also find out more through the links from that site about connecting with interesting people. If I can assist in making your visit more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to let me know. 🙂

  9. And Happy Gardening! We usually have to pick 90% of our tomatoes green, because here in Northern Finland the days and nights get so cold in September before they start to redden. This year we’ve been eating own tomatoes for weeks and weeks already. And cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, garlic, chili, onions… Isn’t this great time of year? Harvest time!

  10. Well, my thumb is not so green, but wife’s is… 🙂 It was a very hot summer here, too. https://scricfinia.wordpress.com/2018/07/24/best-way-to-spend-a-hot-day/

And it was dry here, too, but not nearly as dry as in Southern Finland. There was a shower of rain every now and then, and the garden was okay.

  11. As a Brit who has arrived in Finland and am trying – on a smaller scale than you – to build a garden on a plot in Helsinki, I’m very impressed with what you’ve done here. There’s a big difference between gardening in England and gardening on an island in Helsinki! (Will wisteria survive this first winter I wonder).

Do you take visitors so I could look around?

    • Hi Troy. We don’t grow Wisteria, make sure of your micro climate and planting situation. Ask other local gardeners ☺️ in your neighborhood!
Thank you for the kind words! If you would like to take a walk through, pick a day & time and we’ll try to accommodate you. Kate

    Hi Kathryn,
I was so excited to hear that also I was invited to see your lovely garden although I couldn’t participate the pilates group during this spring.
I have missed mostly you in the gym group. And on top of that I’m crazy about the flowers and the garden 🙂
When would it be possible to come to visit your Garden? My husband Matti would like to come with me. Next weekend is reserved but any other day is free also weekday.

    With best regards
    Riitta-Liisa

    • Hello Riitta-Liisa!
So glad to hear from you. 🙂 After speaking to my husband Pekka, he’s suggested any Friday afternoon that is convenient for you is a perfect time. He has commitments during many of the upcoming weekends, so a weekday afternoon/early evening works out best for us. Just pick a day which is convenient for you, and we will be here to show you around and visit!
I look forward to seeing you!
      Kathryn
